We're Off to Find the Witch's House by Mr.Kreib has become a
a staple in my room every year. If you are looking to get the little ones in the Halloween mood, but don’t want to scare them to pieces, this is a cute story with great illustrations by R.W. Alley.
This book contains lots of repetition, alliteration, word rhyming and just enough light-hearted spookiness to get the little ones in the spirit without scaring the heck out of them.
Of course I had to find a craft with this book. Already bought my lunch sacks for this one. They are going to have so much fun. And what a mess it will be. The kids always go heavy on the glue. Think I might try puff paint or something, Do they even make that anymore???
If you don't want to go glue crazy, then here is a
haunted house printable for you to do.
I love how the book has rhyming words all throughout. As we listen to the story, I have the students listen for the rhyming words has we go through the book. We talk it out in class and discuss it together. I also let them try to come up with other words that rhyme with words in the book. I like to show this video- Rhyme Time before reading the book. Great intro for the lesson if you want to create the hook or a great closure. We love to clap and sing with this video.
My firsties are all about rhyming words.
They can come up with some crazy and wonderful words. I use this sheet to go along with this book and activity.
